In 2014 RAD’s Board of Trustees took the very difficult decision to sell some of the properties owned by the Charity (and that were used by Deaf Clubs) due to repair and maintenance costs. Following extensive research and consultation with the Deaf Community, staff and other key stakeholders, including commissioning the University of Manchester research (SORD) and various meetings and discussions with our Board of Trustees, we are delighted to announce that we are now ready to reinvest approximately £3 million into new services for Deaf people.
We are now preparing to operationalise plans that will lead RAD into a new and exciting chapter.
This money will be invested under four key service themes:
Career advancement and training for Deaf people – breaking down barriers to employment and career progression. This activity will include:
- Careers advice and support
- Employment information & advice
- Management training & advancement
- Employer engagement
A bespoke support service for Deaf older people that, through community befriending, will work in order to reduce isolation and improve health and wellbeing.
An information bank and national advice service – all provided in BSL through face-to-face and remote support; offering much needed information and advice on topics such as; health and care, welfare benefits, housing and education.
Talk-More will support the wellbeing and mental health of Deaf people. Launched in memory of a friend and colleague, Daniel Webster, who tragically took his own life in April 2019 and whose father said “I wished he’d talked more”. Talk More will provide accessible information and facilitated groups across all demographics within the Deaf Community that focusses on mental health and wellbeing.
Our exciting investment activities will go some way towards supporting Deaf people to live independent and fulfilled lives; improving wellbeing and life experiences.
We look forward to sharing more updates about each of our investment activity areas over the coming months – and welcome any feedback or comments you may have regarding our plans
